Medals |
Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in the front line north East of SAILLY-le-SEC on 4th July, 1918. Private FORET is a stretcher bearer in the Company garrisoning the front line close to the area of a minor operation carried out that morning. Much of the enemy's retaliation came down on his Coy's Section of the trench, and 2 of his comrades occupying an isolated post within 75 yards of the enemy's front line were seriously wounded. Private FORET, with another man, crawled out to their assistance in broad daylight, and, although several times fired at by enemy snipers he never hesitated until he reached them. he dressed the wounds, all the time risking his life from the bullets of enemy's snipers, and relieved his mates of considerable pain. Late in the afternoon one of the wounded begged for water, and, without waiting for darkness, this brave stretcher bearer, disregarding the risk to his life from snipers' fire, crawled 200 yards under observation to Coy. Headquarters. He returned at dusk, and eventually succeeded in bringing his comrades back to our lines.'
