Military Medal 'At HERLEVILLE, East of AMIENS, during bombing operations on enemy strong point on the 14th August, 1918 this man laid a telephone wire across machine-gun-swept country and established a telephone with a bombing party to a point within 20 yards of the enemy. He directed fire of the Stokes Mortars on the enemy in rear causing many casualties, driving the enemy back from his position in rear, enabling the bombing party to establish a block and consolidate a post of great tactical importance. His gallant conduct infused the men with confidence and was instrumental in the success of the operation.'

With signalling wire he went forward with the advancing Company in the face of withering machine gun fire. When the Company was held up he crawled across fire swept ground into a shell hole and established a report centre. By this courageous work important information was sent to Headquarters, in consequence of which the Company was later enabled to reach its objective. In the second attack on MT. ST. QUENTIN the same day he again went forward under heavy shell and machine gun fire and established his forward station. Although his fellow linesman was killed he kept gallantly to his task.'
