Military Cross 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in charge of an advanced post. He remained in this post for sixty hours under continuous shell fire and the most trying weather conditions, which rendered the post a sea of mud, and caused his platoon to suffer the most extreme privation from cold and wet. Throughout the whole of this period his messages were invariably cheerful and his fine personal example had a most favourable influence on his men.'
