Military Medal 'During the attack on MONTBREHAIN, east of PERONNE, on 5th October, 1918, Corporal NEWMAN displayed initiative and daring and the qualities of leadership in a very high degree. Repeatedly he found the advance of his section hung up by enemy machine gun fire, and on two separate occasions in the face of almost certain death he dashed out to a flank with his Lewis gun, and so enfiladed the strong posts, as to allow them to be rushed by his men. His skill in dealing with enemy machine guns was instrumental in saving many casualties.'
