Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. A few minutes after the attack near MORLANCOURT on 19th instant was launched, the telephone wires were cut. Corporal SMITH immediately went out through the barrage, located and repaired several breaks. He then followed up the attack and ran a line to the objective. On the line being again cut he went out and had just repaired the break when he was severely wounded.'
