Military Medal 'On 15th October, 1917, near BELLIEWAARDE LAKE, east of YPRES, Sergeant CHARLTON was in charge of a convoy getting railway material to forward area. He found the road at one point torn up by enemy shelling. He immediately organised a working party, carried the necessary material and repaired the road, thus enabling his convoy and traffic generally to et through. On 18th October, 1917, east of YPRES, the main MENIN ROAD was under shell fire and two motor lorries got jammed across the road owing to one of them trying to turn too close in front of the other. Sergeant CHARLTON organised clearing parties and cleared the block with little delay and allowed the traffic to be resumed. But for Sergeant CHARLTON's prompt action the casualties would have been far greater than they were. This N.C.O. has on other occasions displayed like qualities of courage and resourcefulness.'
