Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during the attack on Curlu on 28 August, 1918. In command of the left assault platoon on the left battalion, he pushed out and established a forward post, where he came under heavy machine gun fire. Without hesitation he worked forward 100 yards and bombed the gun. He then assisted the next unit to establish an advance post.'

After his platoon Commander had become a casualty, this N.C.O. assumed command and under a great deal of shell and rifle fire re organised the men of his own and other platoons supervised consolidation, and held off the enemy for sometime until the situation was quite cleared up and the new line well established. His services were of the greatest value, his coolness and initiative being a great help to his Company Commander.'
