Military Medal 'These two men [EVANS and 576 Henry James BROWNE] were acting as linesmen during the operations north west of POZIERES from 5th to 11th August, 1916, and displayed unexampled bravery and enterprise in carrying out their duties, and it was solely due to their courageous efforts that the service between Advanced 4th Brigade Headquarters and Concrete House (15th Battalion Signals) was so well maintained. The longest period for which communication was lost was for 5 hours on the morning of the 10th August, which was owing to inability to get a supply of wire. On the evening of 8th August, 1916, under a heavy artillery barrage, these men laid 4 wires to Advanced Battalion Headquarters, at least 800 yards being in open country, with little or no cover. Every night a barrage was placed around Concrete House, and these men went out and repaired wires and laid new ones. The great courage and devotion to duty displayed by these men is deserving of recognition.'
