War service: Egypt, Gallipoli, Western Front Embarked Alexandria to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, Gallipoli, 1 August 1915; taken on strength, 11th Bn, Gallipoli, 4 August 1915. Admitted to 2nd Light Horse Field Ambulance, 29 September 1915 (cold and debility); discharged to duty, 1 October 1915; rejoined unit, 2 October 1915. Admitted to 3rd Field Ambulance, 29 October 1915 (typhoid), and transferred same day to 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Station, and then to Hospital Ship; to General Hospital, Gibraltar, 7 November 1915 (dysentery); to Convalescent Depot, Gibraltar, 15 November 1915; to England, 22 November 1915, and admitted to Beaufort War Hospital, Fishponds, Bristol, 28 November 1915. Discharged to Australian Intermediate Base, Abbey Wood, 4 January 1916. Treated for venereal disease, 12-25 May 1916 (14 days), and 26-28 May 1916 (3 days): pay stopped for those periods. Tried by District Court Martial, 3 November 1916, on two charges: (1) Absent without leave from 5 May until apprehended at 12.40 am, 22 September 1916; (2) Losing, by neglect, his clothing and regimental necessities in that he at Australian Intermediate Base, Abbey Wood, on or about 4 May 1916 was deficient of Breeches pairs one 13/5, Brush tooth one 3d, Razor one 1/9, Badges 4/10d, Boots two pairs 28/2, U/pants pairs two 8/-, Pantaloons one pair 18/5, Shirt one 5/9, Socks pairs two2/2, Singlet one 4/-, Towel one 11½d, Knife one 4½d, Fork one 4½d, Spoon one 5½d: Total value ₤4-9-11. Found guilty on both charges: awarded 12 months' imprisonment with hard labour, and stoppage of pay until deficiency made good. Total forfeiture of pay: 363 days'. Unexpired portion of sentence of 6 months remitted, 12 March 1917. Proceeded overseas to France, 4 June 1917; rejoined 11th Bn, in the field, 27 June 1917. On leave to United Kingdom, 16 June 1918; rejoined Bn from leave, 3 July 1918. Embarked for England for return to Australia, 17 January 1919. Commenced return to Australia from Devonport on board HT 'Kildonian Castle', 21 March 1919; disembarked Fremantle, 27 April 1919; discharged, Perth, 5 May 1919.
