Meritorious Service Medal 'C.Q.M.S. SMITH has done continuous good service and work at all times and under all conditions. During the winter of 1916/1917 when traffic difficulties impeded to a large extent the efficient rationing of troops in forward areas, particularly in the FLERS, GINCHY and LE SARS sectors and during the subsequent retirement of the enemy to the HINDENBURG line, the energy and efficiency of C.Q.M.S. SMITH was the cause of the excellent maintenance of rations and supplies which, in spite of the difficulties to be overcome, left nothing to be desired. During the offensive at YPRES 20th September, 1917, to 9th October, 1917, when, owing to heavy casualties, ration arrangements were frequently upset, C.Q.M.S. SMITH repeatedly made long trips forward to WESTHOEK Ridge in the endeavour to keep rations and ammunition up to the Company. By his energy and determination, in spite of enemy bombing and shelling and the dislocation of traffic routes during these advances, the supplies of rations and ammunition always reached the Company during the entire series of operations.'
