'On 2nd November, 1917, the Pack Animal Train, conveying rations, came under heavy shell fire at ZONNEBEKE and 5 horses and 7 men (including the N.C.O. in charge of the party) became casualties, the remaining horses stampeded. Driver WARD, on his own initiative, took charge of the party and it was due to his coolness, courage and decision that the train was reorganised and the rations delivered to the Battalion.'
