'Immediatley following an attach on BROODSEINDE Ridge on the morning of 4th October, Sapper THOMSON was one of a party detailed to construct a communication trench over the ridge. The working party was an infantry company which had first to carry ammunition to another point on the ridge and which suffered considerable and became somewhat dispersed in passing through the enemy barrage. Sapper THOMSON was of the greatest assistance to his officer in siting the trench, and then acted most gallantly under heavy fire in searching for the working party and guiding groups as he found them to the work'.
