War service: Western Front Proceeded overseas to France from England, 5 September 1916; taken on strength, 24th Bn, in the field, Belgium, 19 September 1916. Appointed Lance Corporal, 5 October 1916. Promoted Corporal, 6 April 1917. Promoted 2nd Lieutenant, 11 May 1917. Wounded in action, Passchendaele, 9 October 1917 (high explosive shrapnel, left thigh), and admitted to 3rd Australian Field Ambulance, and transferred to 10th Casualty Clearing Station; to Ambulance Train No 10, 15 October 1917, and admitted to No 1 Red Cross Hospital, Le Touquet. Promoted Lieutenant, 16 October 1917. Transferred to England, 5 March 1918, and admitted to 3rd London General Hospital, Wandsworth (gun shot wound, fractured femur, left thigh). Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Kanowna', 16 March 1918; disembarked Melbourne, 22 May 1918; appointment terminated (discharged: medically unfit), 27 November 1918.
