War service: Egypt, Gallipoli Embarked Alexandria to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, Gallipoli, 9 September 1915; joined 14th Bn, Mudros, 19 September 1915. Admitted to 1st Canadian General Hospital, Mudros, 21 September 1915 (enteritis); transferred to 3rd Australian General Hospital, Lemnos, 25 September 1915; to England, 25 November 1915, and admitted to County of London War Hospital, Epsom, 4 December 1915 (enteric). Found guilty, 7 March 1916, of being absent without leave, 4-5 March 1916: awarded 48 hours' detention, and forfeited 2 days' pay under Royal Warrant. Found guilty, 5 June 1916, of (1) breaking camp; (2) being in Weymouth without a pass; (3)breaking camp; (4) being in Weymouth without a pass: awarded 96 hours' detention. Found guilty, 14 June 1916, of being in Weymouth without a pass and resisting arrest: awarded 168 hours' detention. Debited 27/5 for loss of shirt, 27 June 1916. Found guilty, 20 July 1916, of disobedience of orders, viz. being in Salisbury without a pass: awarded 14 days' confined to camp. Transferred to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 4 August 1916. Admitted to Wandsworth Detention Barracks, 2 September 1916. Marched in to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, from detention, 26 September 1916. Commenced return to Australia from Portland on board HT 'Ajana', 17 October 1916 (chronic bronchitis). Found guilty, at sea, 27 October 1916, of (1) using obscene language; (2) insolence to an NCO; awarded 24 hours' detention, and fined £3. Two further charges (1. Disobedience of orders in such a manner as to show wilful defiance of authority ... in that when arrested by order ... he refused to go quietly under arrest and offered violence to those around him; 2. offering violence to a superior officer, in that when taken below by WO Pattinson, he struggled and struck that officer in the execution of his duty) were not dealt with owing to 'absence of evidence'.
