Distinguished Conduct Medal Initiative and resource in organising and leading successful counter-attack at critical moment. (Bullecourt on 6 May 1917). Recommendation date: Military Medal Courage and determination in holding valuable post until the obtaining of reinforcements. (Louverval on 15 April 1917) Recommendation date: Bar to Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in an attack. He accompanied the company commander and went ov er with the first wave. On reaching the first objective he located an enemy machine gun which was holding up the advance of the second objective. He immediately rushed forward single handed, killed one man, and captured the gun and remainder of the crew. Later, while in charge of a mopping up party, he brought in fifty prisoners. Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When the enemy gained a temporary footing in our line he showed great courage and dash in organizing a counter attack. He drove the enemy completely from our position and inflicted severe losses on them.'
Source: 'Commonwealth Gazette' No. 219 Date: Military Medal 'At LOUVERVAL, FRANCE, on 15th April 1917 Sgt. FOWLES was in charge of a picquet post on the right flank of the Battalion. Although the posts to his right were forced back by weight of numbers he gallantly maintained his position until reinforcements were brought up to the line of resistance. His action prevented the enemy from breaking through at that point.'
