Distinguished Conduct Medal

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in going out and carrying wounded to positions of safety when the battery was subjected to heavy shell fire. When his dug out was struck and destroyed by a shell, killing two and wounding twelve of the party, although receiving a severe shock himself, he dressed the wounded under fire, and refused to take cover until ordered to do so. Although gassed, he voluntarily remained at the battery position.'
