Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty near BRAY on 22nd August, 1918. When the attacking infantry were held up by heavy machine gun and artillery fire near their consolidating line, he went forward to within 100 yards of the village with his trench mortar, effectively engaging enemy trench mortar and machine guns, which were causing severe casualties to our troops. When his ammunition was expended, he together with [2808] Lance Corporal LYNCH, returned for more ammunition. His initiative in bringing forward ammunition under heavy fire proved very helpful to the consolidating infantry, in that his trench mortar was there able to subdue enemy machine guns and enabled the infantry to establish their line. He showed great courage throughout the whole operation.'
