'He showed great energy and devotion to duty as a runner on 7th - 9th June 1917 at MESSINES whilst attached to the 12th Brigade Machine Gun Company maintaining communication from the gun positions to the Machine Gun Company Headquarters during very heavy enemy shell fire at a time when such could only be maintained by runner.'
