Embarked Sydney, 7 October 1916; disembarked Plymouth, England, 21 November 1915. Proceeded overseas to France, 21 December 1916. Taken on strength, 54th Bn, 8 February 1917.

Found guilty by Field General Court Martial, 12 August 1917, of deserting His Majesty's Forces, 8 May 1917: awarded 2 years' imprisonment with hard labour. Absent without leave from 1930 on 8 May to 1300 on 25 July 1917: 79 days. Time awaiting trial, 17 days. Committed to military prison in the field, 30 September 1917. Unexpired portion of sentence suspended as from 18 August 1918, and discharged to duty on suspension of sentence.

Admitted to 53rd Casualty Clearing Station, 20 August 1918 (influenza); transferred to 1st Australian General Hospital, Rouen, 21 August 1918 (pleurisy); to England, 23 August 1918, and admitted to 1st Birmingham War Hospital, 24 August 1918; to 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, 2 December 1918; discharged on furlough, 11 December 1918, to report to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 27 December 1918. Admitted to hospital, 20 February 1919 (no further details recorded); discharged to No 2 Command Depot, 13 March 1919.

Commenced return to Australia on board 'Orontes', 15 May 1919; disembarked Sydney, 1 July 1919; discharged, Sydney, 5 December 1919.
