'On the 11th/12th August, 1918, during operations on the SOMME, this N.C.O. worked in cooperation with the 41st Battalion and had charge of a Trench Mortar during the operations. Early in the attack he discovered that an enemy machine gun was likely to impede the advance and with absolute disregard of personal danger he selected a position from which he could engage this target. He succeeded in putting it out of action and killing the crew, and repeated this action on several occasions during the attack. his initiative in promptly dealing with the enemy considerably helped the Battalion in reaching its final objective.'
