War service: Enlisted in the AN&MEF, 11 August 1914; discharged, 4 March 1915. Transferred to the AIF, March 1915. Served Egypt, Gallipoli. Commissioned at Gallipoli, 28 October 1915. Fell ill while serving in Sinai, July 1916; invalided to England. Married Hilda Gertrude Harnett, daughter of John Joseph Harnett, Australian grazier. Rejoined the Light Horse, June 1917; took part in the charge at Beersheba, October 1917. Wounded in action, 1 May 1918.
