Medals |
Military Medal 'For conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty during the operations east of YPRES on the morning of 4th October, 1917. Pte. GAFFNEY was acting as No. 1 on his gun with orders to open up a hurricane bombardment at zero hour on an enemy strong post. Previous to this time the enemy opened up a heavy bombardment on our line, during which his gun was partially buried and he himself wounded. GAFFNEY, although wounded immediately got his gun into action again and carried out his bombardment as ordered. Later he was again wounded but refused to leave his gun until the Infantry had consolidated their position. His personal courage and fine devotion to duty set a splendid example to the remainder of his crews.'
