Proceeded to join the British Expeditionary Force, disembarking Marseilles, France, 12 June 1916.

Wounded in action, France, 14/16 August 1916 (gunshot wound to elbow); admitted to 3rd Canadian General Hospital, Boulogne, 16 August 1916. Transferred to 3rd North General Hospital, Sheffield, England (slight gunshot wound to right elbow), 21 August 1916. Discharged to 1st Convalescent Depot, Perham Downs, 22 September 1916. Proceeded on furlough, 23 September 1916. Returned to France to rejoin unit leaving from Folkestone, England, 4 December 1916. To Australian Division Base Depot , Etaples, 5 December 1916; rejoined unit, 23 December 1916.

Wounded in action, 2 April 1917, and admitted to 13th Australian Field Ambulance (gunshot wound in back 'contusion'); died of wounds, 3 April 1917.
