War service: Egypt, Gallipoli [There is an air of uncertainty surrounding this man. Lt W.W. Paine submitted a statement to Major Leicester, C Company, 1st Battalion, 26 May 1915: 'Pte Galli is in my opinion a deserter from the firing line & a malingerer.' On 16 August 1949 the New Zealand Returned Services' Association wrote to the General Secretary, Federal Executive, RSL, Melbourne, passing on consolidated statements made by Galli regarding his war service: 'Through our Local Associations at Auckland and Timaru, we have received copies of statements, compiled by the abovenamed which, if true, would form the basis for a second "Count of Monte Cristo."'] Commenced return to Australia from Suez on board HT 'Themistocles', 15 August 1915; discharged (medically unfit: rheumatism), Sydney, 5 January 1916.
