'East of Bullecourt on the morning of 13th May, Private Gamble showed great courage and coolness under fire. During a relief the enemy suddenly "barraged" our position and attacked on the left. All telephone communications was cut and Private Gamble went out with Corporal Webb, delivered messages to the front line, and re-established communication. This action is worthy of the highest praise. He showed great initiative at a very critical period.'
