'At POZIERES, FRANCE, on 25th. July 1916. Sergeant GARDINER assisted 2/Lieut TITFORD, 1st Aust. Pioneer Battalion in the consolidation of a trench (known as O.G.1). In the face of superior numbers of the enemy Sgt. GARDINER, with his officer, very gallantly built barricades, behind which our Infantry were able to form and check the enemy bombing parties. A little later, at the same place, the Infantry were heavily attacked, when Sgt. GARDINER again showed great pluck and determination in assisting to repel the attack.'
