Military Medal 'Just before the advance on BROODSEINDE RIDGE east of YPRES on the 4th October, 1917, the N.C.O. in charge of the gun crew became a casualty and Pte. GAY thereupon took charge and advanced with the attacking infantry. During the advance his crew suffered severe casualties. Notwithstanding this and being under heavy shell and machine gun fire he re-organised and brought his gun into action in his allotted position, thereby greatly helping in the protecting of our right flank. By his courage and initiative he rendered valuable assistance in the operations. Throughout he set a very fine example to the other members of his gun crew.'
