War service: Western Front Embarked Sydney, 24 August 1916; disembarked Plymouth, England, 11 October 1916. Found guilty, 22 November 1916, of being absent without leave, Hurdcott, from 2400, 17 November, to 7 pm, 21 November 1916: awarded loss of 12 days' pay; forfeited total of 16 days' pay. Proceeded overseas to France, 4 February 1917; taken on strength, 30th Bn, 6 March 1917. Admitted to 8th Australian Field Ambulance, 15 November 1917 (dental); transferred same day to 5th Division Rest Station. Admitted to 1st Casualty Clearing Station, 12 December 1917 (trench fever); rejoined Bn, 24 January 1918. On leavev to United Kingdom, 4 February 1918; rejoined unit from leave, 19 February 1918. Found guilty, 4 July 1918, of neglect of duty in that he failed to carry out an order given by his superior Officer: awarded forfeiture of 1 day's pay. Wounded in action, 27 August 1918 (gassed shell wound); admitted to 55th Casualty Clearing Station, 28 August 1918; transferred to 12th General Hospital, Rouen, 28 August 1918; to No 2 Convalescent Depot, 30 August 1918; to No 11 Convalescent Depot, Buchy, 1 September 1918; rejoined unit, 15 October 1918.
