Wounded in action, 4 October 1917 (shell wound, right leg); admitted to 10th Casualty Clearing Station, 5 October 1917; transferred to No. 7 Canadian General Hospital, Etaples, 6 October 1917. Transferred to England, 10 October 1917,and admitted to Devonport Military Hospital, 11 October 1917 (severe wound). Transferred to No. 3 Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, 3 December 1917; to No. 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 8 January 1918.

Commenced return to Australia on board 'Llanstephen Castle', 15 February 1918; disembarked Melbourne, 16 April 1918, for onward travel to Sydney; discharged, 21 May 1918.
