War service: Egypt, Western Front Disembarked Suez, ex-HMAT 'Geelong', 18 December 1915. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 17 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 23 June 1916. Posted missing, 20 July 1916. To be reported as 'Killed in Action, 20 July 1916' after Private L. J. Western 334, 32nd Bn, certified that Private Gibney had succumbed to his wounds on that date. Statement, Red Cross File No 1160103, 207 Pte H. MURRAY, 11 April 1917: 'I saw him lying wounded in the German 3rd. line of trenches at Fleurbaix on 19th. July. It was only a slight wound in the groin. We had to leave him there, when we retired. He could not be take. If alive he must be a P/W.' Second statement, 2067 Pte W.L.
