Found guilty at Larkhill, 29 November 1916, of being absent without leave, 12.00 am, 21 November, to 3.00 pm, 24 November 1916: awarded with demotion to gunner rank; forfeited total of 3 days' pay.

Admitted to Fargo Military Hospital, 8 December 1916 (nephritis); discharged to duty, 21 December 1916. Proceeded to France through Southampton, 29 December 1916.

Admitted to 10th Australian Field Ambulance, 9 February 1917, and transferred to 1st Canadian Casualty Clearing Station (compound fracture, right foot); to Ambulance Train '10', 11 February 1917; admitted to No 8 Stationary Hospital, Wimereux, 11 February 1917. Embarked Boulogne on HS 'Proncess Elizabeth and proceeded to England for further treatment, 16 February 1917; admitted to 3rd Australian General Hospital, Brighton, 17 February 1917; discharged on furlough, 10 May 1917.
