'On the 26th August, 1918, east of BRAY, during a daylight attack the troops came under heavy shell and machine gun fire. The Platoon to which this man belonged was temporarily hung up by an enemy machine gun. GILLAM crawled round the flanks, rushed the machine gun crew, killed the two Gunners, and captured the gun. The gallant act enabled the Platoon to continue its course with very few casualties. Throughout the operations this N.C.O. skilfully led his Section with great determination to the final objective.'
