Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on 29/30 August, 1918, near Clery. When his platoon commander was wounded he took command, and kept the men steady in spite of heavy machine gun fire and shelling. Later, when all his company officers were killed, or wounded, he reorganized the company and successfully repulsed two counter attacks. Although cut off from battalion headquarters he got into communication by lamp, sticking to his post with great determination until an officer could be sent up.'

As a patrol leader, he continually worked far in advance of our own troops and kept constant touch with the enemy under heavy and continuous machine gun and rifle fire. By his splendid leadership, initiative and skilful use of his patrol, he obtained and sent back very valuable information. His conduct under extremely difficult circumstances was a magnificent example of determination and devotion to duty.'
