'At WESTHOEK RIDGE 20th September 1917. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty, when despite heavy shell fire, he laid out telephone wires to the front line, and by repairing continual breaks, consequent upon enemy shell fire, he maintained communication throughout.'
