Proceeded overseas to France, 15 February 1917; taken on strength, 21st Bn, in the field, 22 February 1917.

Appointed Lance Corporal, 17 February 1917.

Wounded in action, 10 March 1917 (gun shot wound, right shoulder), and admitted to 45th Casualty Clearing Station; transferred to Ambulance Train No 21, 21 February 1917, and admitted to 12th General Hospital, Rouen; transferred to England, 29 March 1917, and admitted to Reading War Hospital, 30 March 1917; transferred to 1st Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield, 29 September 1917 (gun shot wound, right shoulder, and appendicitis); discharged on furlough, 11 October 1917, to report to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 25 October 1917.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Runic', 20 December 1917; disembarked Melbourne, 13 February 1918; discharged (medically unfit: appendicitis, followed by sub-diaphragmatic abscess), Melbourne, 5 June 1918.
