Proceeded with draft to join Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, 13 November 1915. Taken on strength, 17th Bn, Gallipoli, 8 December 1915. Evacuated from Gallipoli and disembarked Alexandria, Egypt, ex Mudros, 9 January 1916.

Proceeded from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 17 March 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 23 March 1916.

Admitted to hospital with venereal disease, 16 September 1916; discharged to duty, 7 October 1916; total treatment: 22 days. Marched into 2nd Australian Division Base Depot; proceeded to reinforce 13th Bn; taken on strength, 13th Bn, 23 October 1916. Transferred to 17th Bn, 24 November 1916.

Wounded in action (gun shot wound, face), 3 May 1917; admitted to hospital. Discharged from hospital, 13 July 1917; marched into 2nd Australian Division Base Depot, Le Havre, 13 July 1917. Rejoined Bn, 1 August 1917. Treated in hospital for venereal disease, 2 August-26 October 1917; rejoined 17th Bn, 2 November 1917.

Wounded in action, second occasion, 16 April 1918; admitted to hospital (gun shot wound, left leg). Discharged from hospital and marched into Australian Infantry Base Depot, 26 May 1918; proceeded to rejoin unit, 31 May 1918; rejoined unit, 2 June 1918.

Wounded in action, third occasion, 10 August 1918, and admitted to hospital (gun shot wound, left hand), 10 August 1918. Transferred to England, 25 August 1918, and admitted to hospital. Discharged from hospital, 21 September 1918, and sent on furlough. Marched into No. 2 Convalescent Depot, 7 October 1918; marched into No. 1 Convalescent Depot, Sutton Veny, Wiltshire, 5 November 1918. Awarded 4 days confined to camp, 22 November 1918, for being absent from parade on 21 November 1918.

Commenced return to Australia, 21 December 1918; disembarked Melbourne, 4 February 1919; discharged as medically unfit, 11 May 1919.
