Court of Enquiry, held in the field, 29 August 1917, pronounced fate as 'Killed in Action, 19 July 1916'.

Handwritten note on Form B103: 'Presume Buried in No Man's Land approx 5J90 43 to 5K02.5.1 Sheet Hazebrouck 5A'.

Statement, Red Cross File No 1180405, 3072 Pte J.M. GREGORY, 59th Bn (patient, 5th Southern General Hospital, Portsmouth, England), 5 December 1916: 'Informant states that on July 19th 1916 at Fromelles near Armentieres the day of the charge, Goldsmith was shot down just as he was going over the parapet.'

Second statement, 3009 Pte R. BARROW, 59th Bn, 2 July 1917: 'I was wounded at Fleurbaix on the 19th July and crawled back on the 20th. I saw the body of the Casualty lying back on the other side of the Creek, dead. He was a big man with a havy moustache, called "Dad".'
