War service: Egypt, Gallipoli, Western Front

Embarked Alexandria to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, Gallipoli, 4 September 1915.

Admitted to 7th Field Ambulance, 30 November 1915 (jaundice), and transferred to 13th Casualty Clearing Station; to HS 'Karapara', 30 November 1915, and transferred to St Andrew's Hospital, Malta, 4 December 1915; to Ghain Tufficha, 23 December 1915 (dysentery).

Found guilty, 5 February 1916, of wearing chevrons of rank to which he was not entitled: awarded 14 days' Field Punishment No 2.

Discharged from hospital, 14 March 1916.

Disembarked Alexandria from Malta, 19 March 1916; marched in to Overseas Base, Ghezireh, 20 March 1916.

Attached to QMGS Branch, Anzac Hostel, Alexandria, 6 April 1916.

Proceeded to England (date not recorded).

Returned to 27th Bn, 31 May 1916.

Transferred to 7th Training Bn, Rollestone, 29 June 1916.

Found guilty, 4 August 1916, of being absent without leave from 2130, 2 August, until he reported at 1600, 4 August 1916: awarded 168 hours' detention and forfeited 3 days' pay; total forfeiture: 10 days' pay.

Found guilty, 29 September 1916, of being absent without leave from Tattoo, 24 September, until returning at 8 am, 29 September 1916: awarded 168 hours' detention, and forfeited a total of 13 days' pay.

Proceeded overseas to France, 25 September 1917; taken on strength, 27th Bn, in the field, Belgium, 5 October 1917.

Killed in action, France, 23 April 1918.

Statement, Red Cross File No 1180610, 5610 Pte W.H. LIVESAY, 27th Bn, 4 June 1918: 'He was looking over the parapet through a pair of field glasses at about 9 am and I suppose the sun glinted on the glass and a sniper got him. My mate Herring of C Coy was beside him when it happened and told me all about it. Goodfellow was shot through the head and fell straight back into the trench dead.'

Second statement, 2708 Pte E.A. KITE, C company, 27th Bn (patient, Kitchener War hospital, Brighton, England), 18 June 1918: 'I certify that near Ribemont (?) on April 21/18 Pte. S.G. Goodfellow was sniped while standing in a trench in the front line. He was hit in the head and lived for about ½ an hour. [Interviwere: 'Eye-witness: No - but only 20 yards away.']

Third statement, 60 Pte O.E. DUGAN, 27th Bn (patient, 53rd General Hospital, Rouen), 12 June 1918: 'On April 23rd 1918 he was in a trench observing when a bullet struck the glasses he was using and went in one eye and came out of the other.'

Fourth statement, 6094 Pte W.H. HERRING, A Company, 27th Bn (patient, 5th Southern General Hospital, Portsmouth, England), 19 June 1918: 'Pte. Goodfellow was on sentry and looking through some glasses. It was about 9 a.m. and the light was on the glasses. He got sniped through the head, became unconscious at once, and remained so until he died, ¾ hour later.'
