'For conspicuous gallantry in action. He entered an enemy dugout, and, single handed, captured five prisoners. Later he repeatedly carried bombsa to the front line under intense fire. On another occasion, at great personal risk, he extinguished a fire which broke out in a bomb of bombs.'
