'During the attack on PERONNE on 1st September 1918 this N.C.O. showed great courage and devotion to duty while acting as a runner. During the whole of the attack his duties necessitated the crossing and rescuing many times of ground which was continually swept by artillery and machine gun fire. He cheerfully accepted all risks and carried out the most hazardous tasks with great promptitude. His gallant conduct earned for him the esteem and admiration of all Ranks, and his efforts contributed largely to the maintenance of communication.'
