'During the operations east of YPRES on 4th October 1917, he was one of a party attached to a section of 1st Field Company, employed on the construction of a strong point on BECELAERE RIDGE. Although his party suffered heavily, he kept his men under perfect control and was responsible for the high standard of discipline maintained. He set a magnificent example of devotion to duty.'
