Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in the operations on 8th and 9th August 1918 near VILLERS-BRETONNEUX. This N.C.O. was in charge of a Lewis Gun Section in the front line Company during the advance. On reaching ASHWELL WOOD opposition was not met with from the enemy, but owing to the dense growth and the number of our troops in the close vicinity he found it impossible to use his gun with safety. He handed the gun over to his NO. 2 and organising the remainder of his team he carefully led them to a spot where a party of the enemy, approximately 30 strong, were holding out about 20 yards away. He then led his team in a charge of the enemy position and shot several of them with his revolver. This action so demoralised the enemy that they immediately surrendered, the captures being 17 prisoners and two light machine guns. The great daring and courage shown by this N.C.O. greatly inspired his followers and was mainly responsible for the speedy capture of the position.'
