Military Medal

'On 12th August, 1916, when a Corporal was badly hit at POZIERES front line trenches Private GRAY went for stretcher bearers. On the way he came across an enemy patrol of four and having no rifle he picked up a shovel and rushed the patrol striking one of the enemy over the head with it. All the patrol surrendered to him and he brought them in. One of the enemy patrol was a Corporal who held the Iron Cross and another also had a medal ribbon.'
