War service: Egypt, Gallipoli, Western Front Admitted to Anzac Advanced Base, Mudros, 4 December 1915; discharged to join unit, 6 December 1915; joined 7th Bn, Gallipoli, 7 December 1916. Disembarked Alexandria, 7 January 1916 (general Gallipoli evacuation). Found guilty by Field General Court Martial, Serapeum, 15 January 1916, of while on Active Service committing an offence against the property of an inhabitant of the country in which he was serving (Lemnos Island): awarded 30 days' Field Punishment No 2. Award quashed by C-in-C owing to irregularities in the conduct of the Court Martial, 31 January 1916. Transferred to and joined 59th Bn, Tel el Kebir, 24 February 1916. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 18 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 29 June 1916. Posted missing, 19 July 1916. Court of Enquiry, held in the field, 29 August 1917, pronounced fate as 'Killed in Action, 19 July 1916'. Handwritten note on Form B103: 'Presume Buried In No Man's Land approx 5J90 43 to 5K02.5.1 Sheet Hazebrouck 5A'. Statement, Red Cross File No 1210109, 4526 Pte C.
