War service: Egypt

Enlisted, August 1914. Contracted rheumatic fever 10 days later, and was discharged as medically unfit. Arrested and tried by Court Martial as a deserter. It was found that his discharge papers had not been sent to Base Records; charge not proven.

Re-enlisted July 1915. Contracted rheumatism, 5 January-17 February 1916; contracted enteric fever, 29 February 1916.

Admitted to No 2 Australian General Hospital, Ghezireh, 9 January 1916 (cystitis); transferred to No 2 Auxiliary Hospital, Ghezireh, 15 January 1916 (neuralgia); to No 3 Auxiliary Hospital, Cairo, 3 February 1916; discharged to duty, 17 February 1916 (lumbago).

Admitted to Military Infection Hospital, Choubra, 7 March 1916 (para typhoid); transferred to 3rd Auxiliary Hospital, Cairo, 17 April 1916 (cardiac); to 1st Auxiliary Hospital, Cairo, 15 May 1916.

Commenced return to Australia from Suez on board HT 'Port Sydney', 23 June 1916, for discharged (cardiac weakness: myocarditis); disembarked Melbourne; discharged (medically unfit), 22 August 1916.

Re-enlisted, 26 March 1917, for Home Service in Headquarters Company, Seymour. Transferred to No 5 Australian General Hospital, 2 May 1917; discharged from service, 5 June 1917.
