War service: Egypt, Gallipoli Found guilty, 21 December 1914, of being absent without leave while at Mena Camp from 11 pm, 15 December, to 7.30 am, 17 December 1914: awarded 7 days' detention and reverted to rank of Shoeing Smith. Proceeded to join Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, 8 April 1915; killed in action, 10 May 1915. Medals: 1914-15 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal [His mother wrote to the Department of Defence requesting that his wife receive no payment, because "deserted him 2 years and 8 months prior to War". She also stated that he was "only 18 years and 11 days old when married and his wife was a wayward person". She also stated that prior to the war he had met with a solicitor to arrange for a divorce, but had put this aside due to the excitement of war] |
