War service: Egypt, Gallipoli, Western Front Medals: 1914-15 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal Father, Samuel GREEN, b. Lurgan, Co Down, Ireland, enlisted, 29 January 1917, declaring his age to be 44 years 11 months. Wife, Emily Green, wrote to Camp Commandant, Rifle Range Camp, 24 February 1917: ‘I am venturing to address you hoping that you will send my husband home to me as my health is not in a condition as he left without a protector and I have not a single relation or near friend in Australia and my youngest child is just six years old and my eldest son (I lost three in infancy) enlisted on 2nd of Jan.1915, was all through Gallipoli, & in Egypt, & France, since June last. I suffer from my heart & my medical adviser says it will be my death if my husband is [not] sent home. I know now that he enlisted in a moment of enthusiasm and he is (56) fifty six years of age on the 28th of this month.’ Found guilty, 11th Depot Bn, Maryborough, 28 February 1917, of making a false answer to a question put to him by the attesting officer set forth in the attestation paper signed by him in that he stated his age to be 45 whereas it was 56 years as he well knew. Fined £1. Discharged, 28 February 1917, being over military age. |
