'On 31st August 1918, as his section was being led in an attack against an enemy machine gun post which was enfilading the battalion, on MONT ST. QUENTIN, near PERONNE, his section commander and all the lewis gun crew were killed. With splendid bravery he secured the gun and went on alone under fire to a position where he could engage more favourably the enemy post, which he eventually did, putting the gun out of action by killing the gunner and causing the remainder to abandon it.'
