'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He led his platoon into an enemy strong point, being first in. He bore a great part in the hand-to-hand fighting that ensued, and his men were all greatly influenced by his example, carrying everything before them. He displayed courage and leadership of a high order.'
