Military Medal

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On night 29/30th August 1918, bridges were urgently required across the SOMME Canal south of PERONNE before dawn for the infantry to cross. The work was extremely hazardous as the canal was 400 yards out in No Man's Land and the farther bank had not been patrolled. In face of absence of daylight reconnaissance Corporal GRICE by his splendid courage and resource in a locality constantly being shelled and under machine gun fire completed two bridges. The last portion of the work had to be competed with gas masks on owing to gas bombardment. His courage and endurance was of the highest order.'
